Road Tax In Delhi 2026: Charges for Two-Wheelers, Cars and Commercial Vehicles

The road tax payment is mandatory when purchasing a new vehicle, regardless of whether it is intended for private or commercial use. If you purchase any vehicle within Delhi, you are required to pay the applicable road tax in addition to its ex-showroom price.

The road tax rates vary for different types of vehicles; the exact amount you need to pay depends on the specific vehicle you intend to purchase. Here, we have discussed the road tax in Delhi for all types of vehicles, so please ensure you read the article thoroughly.

Road Tax In Delhi

In Delhi, road tax for vehicles is levied in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. The payment required depends on the type of vehicle you are purchasing; there is a difference between the road tax applicable to private vehicles versus commercial ones.

Furthermore, for many vehicles, the tax is paid as a lump sum covering a period of 10 to 15 years, while for others, it must be paid periodically over a specific duration.

Private Vehicles

Two-wheelers:

  • For a two-wheeler priced at ₹75,000 or less, the road tax is 4% of its ex-showroom price; for a vehicle priced between ₹75,000 and ₹200,000, it is 6%; and for one priced above ₹200,000, it is 8%.
  • Furthermore, if the two-wheeler is electrically powered, whether it is a scooter or a bike, then in that scenario, there is no road tax; however, this rule is set to remain in effect until 2030.

Four-wheeler:

  • For CNG-powered cars priced at ₹6 lakh or less, the road tax is 4% of the ex-showroom price; for those priced between ₹6 lakh and ₹10 lakh, it is 7%; and for those priced above ₹10 lakh, it is 10%.
  • The road tax structure for diesel-powered vehicles differs slightly: it is 5% for vehicles priced at ₹6 lakh or less; 7.5% for those priced between ₹6 lakh and ₹10 lakh; and 12.5% for those priced above ₹10 lakh.
  • All electric cars regardless of their price are completely exempt from road tax in Delhi; however, this rule is set to remain in effect until the year 2030.

For private four-wheelers (cars) registered in the name of a company rather than an individual, the road tax structure differs slightly in Delhi; we have explained this below.

  • For cars priced at ₹6 lakh or less, a tax of 5% applies if the vehicle is petrol- or CNG-powered, while a tax of 6.25% applies if it is diesel-powered.
  • If the price exceeds ₹6 lakh but remains below ₹10 lakh, the road tax is 8.75% for CNG or petrol-powered vehicles and 10.94% for diesel-powered ones.
  • Furthermore, if the price is ₹10 lakh or higher, the road tax stands at 12.5% for CNG or petrol-powered vehicles and 15.625% for diesel-powered ones.

Commercial Vehicle

Three-wheeler:

  • For all three-wheelers used commercially, such as auto-rickshaws, whether powered by petrol, diesel, or electricity, the annual road tax is ₹305.

Passenger Commercial Vehicles:

  • The road tax for taxi cabs and vans depends on passenger capacity, which is discussed below:
    • If the passenger capacity is limited to just two, the annual road tax is a mere ₹305.
    • If the passenger capacity ranges from two to four people, the annual tax is ₹605.
    • If the passenger capacity is between four and six people, the annual road tax is ₹1,130.
    • If the passenger capacity falls between six and 18, the annual road tax is ₹1,915.
    • If the passenger capacity exceeds 18, the road tax in the scenario is ₹1,915 plus an additional ₹280 for every extra passenger capacity unit.

Goods Vehicles:

    • ₹665 for a weight of 1 tonne.
    • ₹940 for 2 tonnes.
    • ₹1,430 for 3 or 4 tonnes.
