What should I do to avoid getting a traffic fine in Uttar Pradesh?

If you want to ensure that you do not receive a traffic fine while driving on public roads in UP, you must ensure the following things.

  • While driving, ensure that you invariably carry four specific documents: your driving licence, RC (Registration Certificate), insurance, and PUC (Pollution Certificate). It is not mandatory to possess physical copies of these documents; you may instead present their digital copies via DigiLocker.
  • Follow basic safety rules: if you are on a two-wheeler, ensure that you wear a helmet and avoid riding three-up on a bike or scooter. If you are in a four-wheeler, adhere to the seatbelt rule. Most importantly, do not use a mobile phone while driving.
  • Drive strictly in accordance with the signboards displayed on the road; strictly avoid the mistake of exceeding the speed limit and also refrain from reckless, zig-zag driving.
  • Do not make the mistake of running a red light; stay in your own lane and ensure that you are not driving on the wrong side.
  • If you have consumed alcohol, strictly refrain from driving. Ensure that your licence plate does not feature any fancy fonts. Keep your insurance policy number and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate up to date, and avoid the use of black film or any vehicle modifications.
  • Never make the mistake of even inadvertently blocking the path of an ambulance. Avoid parking in ‘No Parking’ zones and refrain from unnecessary honking.
